The Tab Suspender: Save Memory & Improve Performance This is a powerful and lightweight extension designed to automatically suspend inactive tabs, freeing up valuable system memory (RAM) (as it's getting expensive) and CPU resources. By putting unused tabs to sleep, it ensures your browser remains fast and responsive, extending battery life on laptops and improving overall system performance. SOME BACKGROUND: I initially built this extension for personal use on Firefox, and after a good number of people started using it, I listened to their feedback and improved it. Then, someone emailed me and requested I make a Chrome version of it, so, here it is. This is built for the modern web with latest Manifest V3 so its fully supported. KEY DIFFERENCE VS OTHER EXTENSIONS: Suspended tabs don't automatically reload, you have to click to load them. The extension also uses Chrome's built-in native discarding so the browser behaves as if the tab doesn't exist. Automatic Suspension: - Automatically detects and suspends tabs that have been inactive for a specified period (default is 40 minutes). Significant Memory Savings: - Instantly releases memory used by inactive tabs, allowing your active tabs and other applications to run smoother. Native Tab Discarding (New in v1.7): - Now utilizes the Chromium Native Discard API for maximum efficiency and stability while maintaining our signature "Click to Restore" interface. Prevent Accidental Reloads: - Suspended tabs do not auto-reload on focus. You decide when to load the content. Visual Feedback: - Suspended tabs are clearly marked with a "zzz" icon in the title and a dimmed favicon. Dark Mode Support: - The suspended page automatically adapts to your browser's theme (Light/Dark mode). Smart Whitelisting & Protection: - Whitelist specific domains or individual URLs so they never suspend. - Option to prevent suspension of tabs playing Audio/Video. - Option to prevent suspension of tabs with unsaved form inputs. - Option to prevent suspension of pinned tabs. CROSS-DEVICE-SYNC: - Your settings and whitelist rules sync across all your Chrome instances (if enabled). KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS: - Quickly suspend, unsuspend, or whitelist the current tab using customizable hotkeys. CONTEXT MENU INTEGRATION: - Right-click any page to suspend it immediately or add it to the whitelist. NEW IN VERSION 1.7 - Full migration to Manifest V3 (MV3) for better security and future-proofing. - Integration with Native Discard API for improved memory handling. - Improved persistence: Suspended tabs now survive browser updates and restarts more reliably with new migration logic. - Optimized performance with reduced background activity. PRIVACY & SECURITY The Tab Suspender runs entirely on your device. It does not track your browsing history, collect personal data, or send any information to external servers. It simply monitors tab activity state to determine when to save resources. HOW IT WORKS - You set a timeout duration (e.g., 30 minutes). - If you don't interact with a tab for that duration, the extension unloads the heavy website and replaces it with a temporary, lightweight placeholder. - When you return to the tab, you see the placeholder. Click anywhere on the page to reload the original website instantly. - When you move away from the tab without reloading the original website, the extension discards the tab again after 30 seconds. Perfect for users who keep dozens of tabs open for research, work, or reading lists but want to keep their computer running at top speed.
Auto Tab Discard (suspend)
Increase browser speed and reduce memory load when you have numerous open tabs. "Auto Tab Discard" is a lightweight browser extension that automatically reduces the amount of memory used by open but inactive tabs, helping to conserve battery life on portable devices by disabling JavaScript code and DOM events on discarded tabs. There are two options on the extension's interface to either discard tabs or release discarding (the "x" buttons) The features of "Auto Tab Discard" are: * Improves browser performance and reduces memory usage by automatically or manually discarding inactive, idle, or forgotten tabs. * Includes a list of hostnames or regular expressions that can be excluded from auto-discarding. * Preserves the discarded state of tabs when the browser is closed and reopened. * Indicates the discarded state of a tab through the favicon or title. * Restores the state of a tab, including scroll position and text box content, after it is released from being discarded. * Allows for the forced discarding of specified hostnames. The options for configuring whether tabs should be discarded or not include: * Pinned tabs * Tabs that are playing media * The presence of a power source * Unsaved content or user input in a tab The available plugins for "Auto Tab Discard" are: * Release the discarded state of the next or previous tab. * Release the discarded state of all tabs in the active window. * Automatically discard all newly opened inactive tabs. * Store YouTube's timestamp before a tab is discarded. * Permanently delete (remove) old discarded tabs that are inactive. * Unlike the "The Great Suspender" extension, this extension uses the native method for discarding tabs, which means that even if the extension is removed or the browser crashes, your browser will automatically restore everything for you. https://webextension.org/privacy-policy/extension/tab-discard.html
Tab Discard (Suspender)
Easily suspend inactive tabs and save up memory for your browser. Tab Discard (Suspender) is an extension that lets you easily suspend either all inactive tabs or just the active tab by clicking on the toolbar button. In principle, suspending tabs can reduce the browser memory and enhances your browsing experience. When you click on a suspended tab (make it active) it will be loaded with the previous content automatically. This addon is useful when you have several open tabs, you can suspend them all (free up the memory) with just one click and then visit them one-by-one to unsuspend. This way, your browser will use the least amount of memory and have a better performance. Please right-click on the toolbar button and then select the desired option for suspending tabs (i.e. active or inactive tabs). To report bugs, please visit the addon's homepage (https://mybrowseraddon.com/tab-discard.html) and fill the bug report form.
Auto Tab Mute
Extension to automatically mute background tabs if the current tab is playing audio. This allows for fast switching between different audio playing tabs without manually muting and unmuting. This extension can be toggled on/off by a button added to the browser interface or by a keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+U/Cmd+Shift+U). Updates Version 3.1: - Fixed behaviour when "Apply across windows" was selected and the active window was not on an audible tab but a background window had an audible tab Version 3.0: - Added experimental option for 'Active Tab' strategy to apply it across multiple windows (please send any issues to the listed email address) - Added 'Mute All' strategy to mute every tab and prevent any new tabs playing audio - Improved stability of 'Allow List' strategy - Updated logo and branding of the extension - Updated UI - Updated to manifest version 3 and changed to use service workers Version 2.1: - Added workaround for chromium issue 1213925 which prevents fetching tab info when clicking on a new tab Version 2.0: - Added popup upon clicking the tray icon to allow controlling the extensions behaviour - Added ability to select muting strategy, with "Active tab" being equivalent to the behaviour of the original extension and "Allow List" allowing you to select which tabs should be allowed to play audio by selecting the check boxes next to the title of the tab in the popup - The behaviour should be the same as before if the "Active tab" strategy is selected, only difference is an extra click to enable/disable the extension since the tray icon now shows the popup on click - Please contact me at the listed email address if any desired behaviour has been changed or if you have suggestions for other muting strategies to be implemented
Tab Defenders
Worried that background tabs are eating up precious RAM? Tab Defenders is a memory manager for Chrome that automatically shuts down inactive tabs and frees up precious memory so that your system remains speedy and responsive! MODE 1: CLOSE TABS AFTER SPECIFIED DURATION You can specify a duration (in minutes) after which any background tab (i.e. a tab that hasn't been visted) will be shut down and its URL saved to storage. This mode is great if you wish to periodically clean Chrome tabs while ensuring that they are always available for recovery if needed. MODE 2: CLOSE TABS USING LEARNT PATTERNS The second mode of operation automatically learns your usage behaviors and shuts down tabs when it thinks that the chance of you returning to them is negligible. Tab Defender uses a state of the art statistical modelling module to track your domain-wise habits and automatically clean tabs in the background. RECOVERING CLOSED TABS If a tab was accidently closed by the extension and you wish to recover it, use the 'View Complete History' option under the 'History' tab to see closed tabs and recover them with the click of a button. WHITELISTING DOMAINS If there are some domains whose tabs you do not want to be automatically closed, you can add them to the whitelist directly from the extension. THEMES The extension offers a modern UI theme (default) as well as a more retro look. You can switch between the two by clicking the 'Tab Defenders' button in the extension popup. Please close and re-open the popup to see your changes in action.
