Chrome automatically appends (1) to the end of the filename if there's another file with the same name in the download folder. If you are tired of having a lot of duplicates files in your download folder, look no further. With this extension, you'll be prompted with "save as" dialog for you to choose either rename the downloading file or overwrite the existing file. No more filename(1).pdf in your Downloads folder.
Cantrips.ai: Auto Rename Downloaded Files Based on Content
Automatically replace messy filenames with consistent and meaningful ones. ✔ We built a Chrome extension that auto generates meaningful filenames for new downloads. It has tailored formats for major file types like papers, books, financial reports, etc. For example, - a paper's format = download date - title - first author's last name - area, so the filename would be 20250208 - Attention Is All You Need - Vaswani - LLM instead of 1706.03762 from arXiv - an SEC filing's format = company - filing type - report period, so the file name would be Apple - IPO Prospectus - 19940126 instead of 29ef375c-56c2-48b9-917d-b12812efc1a4 (??!) from Apple's investor relations website We are also developing a feature where users can add or adjust their file naming rules. For example, if you like underscores and download meeting memos a lot, you can add meeting memos = interviewee's name_company_position_topic_date. 📌 User Guide - Sign in and then turn on the switch. You are good to go! - Note, Cantrips.ai hasn't supported some websites like downloads from GitHub due to technical complications. It hasn't supported images, either. We are also considering applying a similar approach to other knowledge management tools like website bookmarks or folders. Let us know your experience with the extension and what features you'd like to see! 🥳 Why the extension? - My desktop is buried with meaningless and odd filenames... Can't really figure out which file is the one I need. - More importantly, I want my desktop/finder to look tidy. It feels great when everything is organized, but I don't want to handle renaming files in the mid of my research (and I become a bit lazy later). Hence we built a tool to auto rename files for us.
Overwrite Existing Downloads
Overwrite Existing Downloads extension will help you to overwrite existing files instead of adding ' (1)', ' (2)', etc.
Downloads Overwrite Already Existing Files
- Very similar to the original "Downloads Overwrite Existing Files". This one includes a bug fix so it will remember your previous download folder, rather than default back to your default download folder. - Microsoft Edge Addon: https://microsoftedge.microsoft.com/addons/detail/dfnblaebmpjlokbkadgeaghajajidojj - See source code here: https://github.com/zach-adams/downloads-overwrite-already-existing-files - I am not responsible for lost/overwritten data. This does not compare the contents of files or the file modification time before overwriting, it only compares filenames.
Duplicate Tabs Closer
Duplicate Tabs Closer detects and closes duplicate tabs automatically, or displays them in a panel for manual review. When you open a URL that is already open in another tab, Duplicate Tabs Closer can close it immediately or show it in the panel so you decide. A badge on the extension icon always tells you how many duplicate tabs are currently open. Auto-close mode: the duplicate tab is closed the moment it is detected. The original tab can be activated automatically, moved to the position of the closed tab, or left as-is. Manual mode: duplicate tabs are listed in the panel. You close them individually or all at once. The extension compares tabs based on their URL, but you can adjust what counts as a match: Ignore case in the URL Ignore the www prefix in the domain Ignore the hash part of the URL Ignore the query string Ignore the entire path (compare only the domain) Compare by page title instead of or in addition to the URL Set a title similarity threshold for fuzzy title matching Define URL pattern rules: any two tabs matching the same wildcard pattern are treated as duplicates, even if their full URLs differ Define title pattern rules: same idea, applied to page titles PRIORITY RULES When a duplicate is detected, you control which tab is kept: Keep the older tab (default) or the newer tab Keep the tab with HTTPS when one is HTTP and one is HTTPS Always keep the pinned tab Keep and reload the older tab with the newer URL (useful for redirects) WHITELISTED URLs Tabs matching a whitelist pattern are never auto-closed. They still appear in the duplicate list with an indicator, but the extension leaves them open. Search for duplicates only in the active window, or across all open windows. On Firefox with Multi-Account Containers, you can also limit detection to tabs in the same container. The popup shows the current list of duplicate tabs. Click a tab to jump to it. Close individual tabs or all at once. The panel can be collapsed to show only the duplicate list, and sections can be pinned to stay visible in compact mode. Visual themes: Sky, Sage, Rose, Amber, Slate, Violet, Ocean Night, Charcoal, Midnight Purple, Dark Teal, OLED Black Custom badge colors for duplicate and no-duplicate states Option to open the popup automatically when a new duplicate is detected Option to close the popup after clicking Close All KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS No default shortcuts are set to avoid conflicts with browser built-ins. You can assign shortcuts for: Close all duplicate tabs Toggle between auto-close and manual mode INTENTIONAL DUPLICATES Tabs opened on purpose using the browser's built-in Duplicate Tab command are never auto-closed. The extension operates entirely locally. No data is collected, transmitted, or stored outside your browser. BUG REPORTS AND FEATURE REQUESTS
